Zamalek hit by FIFA ban days before Kaizer Chiefs test

Zamalek hit by FIFA ban days before Kaizer Chiefs test

The White Knights had made the perfect start to their continental campaign with a hard-fought 1–0 victory over Zesco United this past weekend.

But just as optimism began to build, the club was hit with another off-field blow that threatens to derail their momentum.

According to Kooora, FIFA issued a new registration ban against Zamalek due to outstanding payments owed to Swiss coach Christian Gross.

The Cairo outfit reportedly still owes the 71-year-old tactician $200 000 (about R3.4 million), a dispute stemming from his second spell at the club.

Gross returned to Zamalek midway through last season after the dismissal of Jose Gomes and enjoyed a relatively successful run, losing only two of his 15 matches in charge across all competitions.

Despite his steady record, he was abruptly removed from his post and later escalated the matter to FIFA, leading to the latest sanction.

The club’s hierarchy now faces urgent pressure to raise funds to overturn the ban and reinforce the squad—crucial for maintaining both their continental ambitions and their domestic campaign, where results have been under scrutiny.

In the immediate term, Zamalek must shift focus to the challenge ahead: a high-stakes trip to South Africa to face Kaizer Chiefs at the Peter Mokaba Stadium this weekend.

The Egyptians were knocked out of the competition last season by South African side Stellenbosch FC, and they will be desperate to avoid a repeat against Amakhosi despite the growing turmoil off the field.
