Florian Wirtz's Liverpool move: A risky record-breaking gamble?
Liverpool are on the verge of signing Bayer Leverkusen's Florian Wirtz in a deal that could smash the British transfer record, with negotiations nearing a reported 150 million euros.
The transfer, confirmed by Leverkusen on Tuesday, sees the 30-year-old shot-stopper commit to a contract running until 2028.
The deal is reportedly worth an initial 10 million euros, with potential add-ons taking the total fee to around 13 million based on performance-related incentives.
Brentford had originally signed Flekken from FC Freiburg in 2023 for a fee in the region of 13 million euros, and Leverkusen are understood to have largely met the English club's valuation during negotiations.
Flekken endured a challenging debut season in England, struggling to adapt to the Premier League's tempo and intensity.
However, he showed marked improvement in his second year with Brentford, finding greater consistency and earning plaudits for his shot-stopping and distribution.
"Mark exudes impressive physical presence and has certainly been one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League over the past two years," B04 sporting director Simon Rolfes noted in a club statement.
"He knows the Bundesliga from his successful time in Freiburg. His years in England and his role in the Dutch national team have also given Mark a great deal of international experience. This means we are very well set up in goal for the coming years."
His move to Leverkusen marks a return to more familiar territory, having previously impressed in the Bundesliga with Freiburg.
The Dutch international is expected to add valuable depth and experience to Leverkusen's goalkeeping ranks as the club continues to build under manager Xabi Alonso.
