Eddie Howe gets mixed injury news as Newcastle gear up for Palace clash

The Newcastle boss confirmed that Lewis Miley is back in training and could feature for the first time since January, offering a timely boost after a difficult spell. However, there was less encouraging news regarding Bruno Guimaraes, who will miss the clash after illness disrupted his recovery.

"Bruno suffered from mumps after returning from Brazil," Howe explained. "It's not an injury, but it's affected his preparation. He won't be involved this weekend and could also miss the Bournemouth game."

There was also a setback for Fabian Schar, who has undergone a minor operation following an infection. Howe confirmed the defender is expected to be sidelined for around a month, describing it as "bad news" for the squad.

Despite those absences, Howe believes his squad is in a stronger position than before their defeat to Sunderland. He also highlighted the positive impact of Sandro Tonali, who has remained active despite a recent knock.

Looking ahead to the challenge at Selhurst Park, Howe was full of respect for Palace. "They're very well organised, with a superb coach and dangerous players. It's always a difficult place to go, so we'll need to be at our best," he said.

Reflecting on the three-week break since the Sunderland loss, Howe felt it had ultimately helped his side reset. "It gave us time to analyse our performances and refocus. The criticism after that defeat was expected, and we've accepted it."

Off the pitch, Howe also paid tribute to Kieran Trippier, who is set to leave at the end of the season. "He's been one of the best players I've managed," Howe said. "A leader, consistent, and outstanding both on and off the pitch."

With seven games remaining, Newcastle remain firmly focused on securing European qualification. "The gap is small," Howe added. "That's our target, and we'll keep pushing until the end."
