Former Orlando Pirates midfielder Linda Mntambo reflects on sacrifices as he announces retirement

The veteran midfielder confirmed the decision in an emotional statement on Wednesday, bringing the curtain down on a journey that saw him represent several Premier Soccer League clubs, including Orlando Pirates and Chippa United, while earning a reputation as one of the game's most dedicated professionals.

Mntambo leaves the game as one of the Premier Soccer League's (PSL) most respected figures, having earned admiration for his work ethic, leadership and commitment throughout his career. 

His retirement also signals the end of a four-year stint with Sekhukhune United, where he served as captain and played a key role both on and off the field.

Reflecting on his journey from humble beginnings to the professional ranks, Mntambo admitted that accepting the moment was not easy.

"I never thought this day would come so soon," Mntambo said.

"Growing up as a young boy in Ezimhlophe, I've always wanted to turn professional and having lived that dream since 2013 has been a journey worth celebrating."

The experienced midfielder also opened up about the sacrifices required to maintain a career at the highest level, particularly the impact football had on his family life.

"The biggest sacrifice I've had to make for my career is building a family and knowing that I will not be fully present dealing with my kids," he said.

"I hope my kids will again look back at the career I've had and be proud of what Dad had to go through. Of what Dad built for the family."

Mntambo's career was not without its challenges, as he battled injuries and periods of criticism during his time in the PSL. However, he believes the time has come to step away from the game.

"They say good dancers know when to leave the stage," he added.

"As tough as it is, I'm going to miss the game, but I'll never be lost to it."

The former Buccaneers midfielder also paid tribute to the leadership at Sekhukhune United, thanking chairman Simon Malatji and CEO Jonas Malatji for the opportunity to represent the club over the past four years.

"Today, I'm officially announcing my retirement from football. Officially hanging my boots. People would not know me today if it wasn't for football," he said.

While his playing career has come to an end, Mntambo is expected to remain involved in the sport, with reports suggesting that a move into football broadcasting and analysis could be his next chapter.
