Chiefs, currently ninth on the log, have conceded 29 goals in 25 matches — a defensive record among the worst in the league.
Khune, 37, departed Chiefs earlier this season after a long-standing career. In his absence, the club has rotated Bruce Bvuma, Brandon Petersen, and more recently Fiacre Ntwari in goal. However, stability has been lacking.
Speaking to Soccer Laduma, Khune lamented the current standards at Chiefs, calling the situation "heart-breaking" and pointing out the club's historical reputation for producing elite goalkeepers.
He placed part of the blame on a lack of quality local goalkeeper coaches, arguing that foreign dominance in the position hampers development for both Chiefs and the national team.
Khune added, "You need a goalkeeper coach who is South African, who will push you to almost Ronwen's [Williams] level... but with the current generation, there's a big gap."
Kick-off for the highly anticipated derby is at 3pm on Saturday at FNB Stadium.
