Al Ahly sack former Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro after seven matches
Al Ahly have parted ways with former Orlando Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro after only seven matches at the helm of the African giants.
In a heartfelt statement addressed to the board, El Khatib said it had been an honour to lead the Cairo giants over the past eight years.
"Eight years ago, we pledged to Al Ahly's members and fans to work with sincerity, effort, and vision so that the club remains on top with its history, principles, and achievements," said El Khatib in a statement as quoted by Kingfut.com.
"Over two election terms, I was honored to serve as president, working alongside you to elevate our club across sports, economic, administrative, and social levels."
The 69-year-old revealed that medical concerns were behind his decision not to seek re-election.
"Several times I tried to step down, in line with the doctors' advice, but circumstances always forced me to return. Now it is necessary to respond to their strong recommendations to avoid pressure.
With elections less than two months away, I announce that I will not run for another term and will begin medical treatment immediately," he explained.
El Khatib, who has served as president since 2017, oversaw a hugely successful era in which Al Ahly won five Premier League titles, three Egypt Cups, six Egyptian Super Cups, four CAF Champions League trophies, and two CAF Super Cups.
The club also competed in five FIFA Club World Cups, claiming three bronze medals, and became the first African team to qualify for the FIFA Intercontinental Cup.
A legendary figure long before his presidency, El Khatib remains Al Ahly's all-time top scorer with 157 goals, including a record 107 in the league.
As a player, he won 10 league titles, five Egypt Cups, two CAF Champions Leagues, and three African Cup Winners' Cups - cementing his place as one of the greatest icons in the Red Devils' history.
