Ambitious George Matlou eager to extend Kaizer Chiefs stay
Kaizer Chiefs midfielder George Matlou is hoping to secure a new contract as his current deal will expire at the end of next month.
The 23-year-old has enjoyed a breakout campaign with Gallants, emerging as one of their top performers in a season where the Limpopo side remains in contention for a top-eight finish. They close off their league campaign against Magesi FC this coming Saturday.
Nemtajela, who is comfortable operating as both a defensive midfielder (number six) and a central playmaker (number eight), rose through the ranks at Senaoane Gunners before breaking into the professional scene with Gallants in the Motsepe Foundation Championship. He has seamlessly adapted to top-flight football this season.
His performances did not go unnoticed, attracting attention from Kaizer Chiefs and Sekhukhune United. However, Pirates moved decisively, finalising a club-to-club agreement and completing the player's medical. Nemtajela joins the Buccaneers on a three-year deal, with an option to extend.
His arrival signals the beginning of a midfield reshuffle at Mayfair. Sihle Nduli is also expected to join from Stellenbosch FC, while veteran midfielder Miguel Timm is set to depart when his contract expires at the end of June.
Currently, Pirates' midfield department includes Thalente Mbatha, Mkhehleni Makhaula, Goodman Mosele, and Selaelo Rasebotja. Youth prospects Camren Dansin and Simphiwe Selepe have also been promoted to the senior team in recent months.
Ndabayithethwa Ndlondlo, another central option, is nearing the end of his three-year deal and could be on his way out, adding to the changing landscape in the engine room.
With Nemtajela now seemingly on board, the Buccaneers are looking to inject fresh energy and depth into their midfield as they prepare to challenge for honours in 2025/26.
