Spain hold back Lamine Yamal return as Aitor Karanka calls for 'calm' ahead of FIFA World Cup

Spain hold back Lamine Yamal return as Aitor Karanka calls for 'calm' ahead of FIFA World Cup

Speaking from Spain's training base, Spanish Football Federation technical director Aitor Karanka made it clear there is no fixed return date for the youngster, despite reports suggesting he could be lined up for Spain's third group-stage match.

"We'll see when the best time is for him to return," Karanka said, stressing that the priority is the player's long-term fitness rather than rushing him back for a specific game.

He also highlighted the strong working relationship between Spain and Barcelona, with constant communication between medical departments guiding every step of Yamal's recovery.

"It's important to be transparent. We've been in contact with Barca's medical staff, and we're all working together to determine the best time," he explained, referencing cooperation with Barcelona figures including Deco and Bojan Krkic.

Karanka praised Yamal's personality as well as his talent, suggesting the winger's impact goes beyond his performances on the pitch.

"He has that joy off the field. On the field he brings freshness and quality that can define an era," he said.

The approach, according to Karanka, reflects a wider strategy within the Spain setup led by coach Luis de la Fuente, where medical staff and coaches work closely to assess each player individually before making decisions on availability.

"Recovery is going very well. It's up to the doctors and the coach to decide what is best," Karanka added.

Brazil have been drawn into Group C for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and will face Morocco, Haiti, and Scotland in the group stage.
