Antonio Van Wyk reveals why he joined trophy-hungry Mamelodi Sundowns

The 24-year-old winger completed a move from Austrian club SV Ried to the reigning African champions despite enjoying a solid campaign in Europe, where he made 30 league appearances last season.

Rather than waiting for a move to a bigger European league, Van Wyk decided the opportunity to join one of Africa's most successful clubs offered the perfect platform to grow his career while competing for silverware every season.

Speaking on the Sundowns Pitchside Podcast, Van Wyk admitted the club's relentless pursuit of trophies was a decisive factor in his decision.

"The history of the club and the trophies attracted me to Sundowns. You're guaranteed to win a trophy or two every season," he said.

"As a player you want to be decorated with trophies and good numbers. I felt the next step in my career, if it wasn't in Europe, was here with the African champions."

Having settled into life at Chloorkop, the former Stellenbosch FC star is already thinking beyond his debut season.

His biggest ambition is to help Sundowns reclaim the Betway Premiership title and deliver a third CAF Champions League crown.

"It feels so good to be here. Everyone has been amazing towards me," Van Wyk said.

"When you look at the badge, you see two stars. I think everyone wants to see three. That would be a special achievement."

Van Wyk returns to South African football after two seasons in Austria, where he continued his development following his rise through Stellenbosch FC's academy and first team. He now joins a Sundowns side expected to challenge on every front as they chase domestic and continental success once again.
